Other Financial Resources
VA Supplemental Benefits
Additional funding programs available directly from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
VA Work-Study Allowance: Earn money while you study by working at a VA-approved site.
- What it is: A tax-free hourly wage paid by the VA (equal to the federal or state minimum wage, whichever is higher).
- Eligibility: You must be using a VA education benefit (e.g., Ch. 33, Ch. 35, Ch. 31, Ch. 30, or Ch. 1606) and be enrolled at least three-quarter (¾) time.
- Where to Work:
- USC Veterans Certification Office: We have a limited number of “select slots” available for student workers.
- USC Veterans Resource Center (VRC): The VRC also maintains separate work-study positions.
- How to Apply: Do not submit an application blindly. Because positions are limited, please email us first to inquire about current openings at either office.

USC Financial Aid and Scholarships
We strongly encourage all veterans to apply for financial aid. In general, VA benefits do not negatively impact your eligibility for federal need-based grants.
Step 1: Apply for Federal Aid
Submit the FAFSA to see if you qualify for the Pell Grant or Federal Direct Loans.
- VA education benefits are not considered estimated financial assistance for federal need-based aid.
Step 2: USC Scholarship Universe
Use USC’s official scholarship matching tool to find internal and external awards tailored to your profile.
- Log in to Scholarship Universe (Use your USC NetID)
Step 3: School-Specific Awards
Many USC schools offer their own military-specific scholarships. Check with your academic department or visit the USC Military & Veterans Initiatives scholarship page.
External Military Scholarships
Reputable third-party organizations that support student veterans.
- Pat Tillman Foundation: For high-achieving veterans and spouses.
- Student Veterans of America (SVA): Various corporate-sponsored scholarships.
- Fisher House Foundation: Scholarships for military children and spouses.
